We are bombarded with gossip about celebrities. However, the social scientists who study gossip have concluded that most of our gossip is about friends and people we know. It’s easier than ever before to gossip, particularly on blogs. For some of us, gossiping now is considered to be more socially acceptable and actually desirable. Put the two types of gossip together (about celebrities and friends), and that amounts to a lot of gossip.

Do you currently gossip more than in past years?

Yes. It’s become more acceptable since I was a kid in the 50’s. Then it was done but it was considered bad form. Today, it’s become the stuff of social conversation. I don’t mind it most of the time but when it gets into people’s sex lives I find it decidedly distasteful. But nothing seems sacred anymore. Why should gossip be maligned more than any other human tendency?
